EFFECTS OF MAGNETOTHERAPY
The magnetotherapy triggers off an action favoring the reparative processes of the tissues and it
stimulates the natural organic defenses.
According to the biological effects, the therapeutic action of the magnetic fields can be resumed
in two main strategies:
1. Anti-inflammatary and anti-oedematigenous action;
2. Action stimulating tissue reparation processes.
Cellular membranes can be considered as “small batteries”, whose output voltage has been me-
asured. More precisely, healthy nervous cells have a potential difference of 90 millivolt between
the inner nucleus and the outer membrane while in the other cells this tension measures approxi-
mately 70 millivolt.
When the tension within the cells tends to wind down, the organism feels the effects in the form
of inflammatory processes, pain in the bones, in joints, back pain, wounds that do not heal.
When these cells become ill due to an infection or trauma or for whatever reason, they lose their
energy reserve. Thus, a cell which should have a tension of 70 millivolt under healthy conditions,
it only measures 50/55 millivolt when it is ill. When this tension drops below 30 millivolt necrosis
occurs, which is the death of the cell.
The aim of magnetotherapy is to recharge and regenerate the cells which have lost their vital
energy.
The pathology of the musculoskeletal apparatus is the most specific field of application of the
magnetotherapy.
All the traumatic events, from a small sprain to a serious fracture may benefit from this therapy, at
times even allowing remarkable recovery times. Bone pathologies have also shown shorter repair
processes and recovery times when treated with magnetotherapy.
Thus, magnetotherapy - by taking advantage of low frequencies - may be considered as a
first-choice therapeutic methodology especially in the treatment of inflammatory, traumatic and
degenerative pathologies of the osteoarticular and musculotendinous apparatus.
Les’t see at a glance what are the benefits of magnetotherapy on the musculoskeletal apparatus:
- enhances osteogenesis stimulating osteoblast activity, accelerating the osseous callus forma-
tion and mobilizing calcium ions;
- reduces the inflammations;
- improves the flow of the capillaries and microcirculation;
- promotes the reabsorption of edemas and interstitial fluids;
- improves the exchange of the cells;
- relieves pain.
APPLICATION METHODS
During the magnetotherapy the patient has no direct perception of the application of the magnetic
field. The action is strictly connected to the reaction ability of the tissue components to the phe-
nomenon of magnetic induction.
The duration of the exposition to the field gains an important role and it should be considered in
relation with the pathology that has to be treated. The gradual action and the effectiveness of the
treatment can be noticed during a long period. This treatment is to be preferred for chronic disea-
ses but the severe trauma can benefit with a reduction of the recovery time. In the symptomatic
pain treatment during the acute phase, other physical therapeutic forms can be linked to a more
immediate response (laser, TENS).
