Glossary
The following is an alphabetical list of specialized words and technical
terms with their definitions, commonly used in the tape drive and tape
media industry.
A
Access
(v.) To read, write, or update information on a storage medium,
such as magnetic media. (n.) The operation of reading, writing, or
updating stored information.
Access Time
The interval between the time a request for data is made by
the system and the time the data is available from the tape drive.
Advanced PRML
Advanced Partial Response Maximum Likelihood. The
advanced PRML channel technology provides high-encoding efficiency
recording densities for greater capacity and performance.
Allocation
The process of assigning particular areas of the media to
particular data or instructions.
AMP Media
Advanced Metal Powder Media. A state-of-the-art media
first designed for Super DLTtape. It incorporates durable metal powder
technology for high-density data storage and embedded non-magnetic
information for head tracking.
Archiving
The removal or copying of data from the computer system
onto secondary storage media that is safely stored away.
ASIC
Application Specific Integrated Circuit.
ASTM
American Society for Testing and Materials.
