Wear criteria
The chain must be replaced when one of the following criteria is fulfilled.
-
Plastic deformation of a chain link as a result of tensile or bending forces.
-
Reduction of the average wire diameter at any point on the chain link of more
than 10% of the nominal thickness. Average wire diameter = (d1 + d2) / 2. The
average wire diameter shall be calculated using two individual measurements, d1
and d2, made at an angle of 90
°
with respect to each other.
-
An increase in the chain pitch 1P of more than 5% of the original pitch.
-
An increase in the chain pitch 11P of more than 2% of the original pitch.
-
Sharp edges, notches or cracks in the surface of the chain.
8.6
Hook
When the load hook is subjected to normal usage conditions, it will last a long time with minimal
wear. Below illustration and hook table 1, 2 and 3 shows the dimensions of a new hook which must
be used to determine the actual wear.
The load must always be suspended from the base of the hook. If tip of the
hook is subjected to load, an increase of value a2 is likely to occur as a result of
tensile or bending forces.
A hook can quickly wear due to improper load attachment and/or overload. In
order to reduce wear and extending the service life of the hook, read chapter
2.6 “Proper load attachment / suspension”.
