People react to ozone in rather sensitive ways. The concentration of ozone used for disinfection is
between 0.5 and 2.5ppm. People can detect an ozone concentration of 0.01ppm by smell. According
to the Hungarian Ministry of Health, ozone with a concentration under 0.01 ppm with up to ten hours
of contact has no harmful impact on the human body. According to the Ministry, each unpleasant
symptom (dry mouth and respiratory irritation) immediately disappears with no further effects once
the person leaves the area with ozone (Joint decree of the Hungarian Ministry of Health and Ministry
of Social and Human Services No. 25/2000, 30 September 2000).
Precautionary measures when using an ozone generator
Please acquire a gas mask with an ozone filter that covers the eyes, nose and mouth, and have it
available (an FFP2 mask with an active coal filter against welding smoke and ozone). It may also be
necessary to air rooms that have been treated. In this case, the free flow of proper fresh air or
effective air extraction should always be ensured. After a short period of human exposure to ozone,
the ability to smell is temporarily lost.
Immediate medical attention is required if the following is experienced in case of exposure to
ozone

Irritation, damage, watering, redness or a sense of burning in the eyes
▪
Respiratory irritation, unpleasant sensation in the nose, dry/irritated throat, chest pains,
heavy breathing, strong cough, headache or nausea
First aid
▪
Leave the danger zone and take the person concerned to direct fresh air.
▪
Check the pulse and breathing.
▪
Visit a doctor immediately in case of respiratory failure, persistent cough or respiratory
irritation.
▪
Calm the injured person.
▪
Call emergency services if necessary.

Do not inhale ozone. Inhaling ozone reduces lung function for a number of
days.
Read all the instructions carefully, particularly the safety requirements.
