The best picture quality is achieved if the supplied resolution received corresponds approximately to the
resolution of the TV being used. The TV-19PL110D has a resolution of 900x1440. The best picture quality
is therefore achieved with a picture signal of 1080ix1920. The resolutions 720x1280 and 576ix704 also
generate good, sharp images.
The low resolution of analogue cable TV is not recommended for HD-ready equipment, as it gives the
poorest picture quality visually. However, analogue cable TV is altogether sufficient for cathode ray tube TVs
and their low resolution of just 576ix704.
Picture quality and black bars
Wide screen films come in different formats. The format is the relationship
between the width and height of the picture. For example, with a 16:9 film
the width to height ratio is 16:9 or 1.78:1. Only 16:9 films can fill a HD-
ready screen without black bars. Therefore, black bars are always visible
when a format other than 16:9 is received. E.g. 4:3, A 4:3 displays vertical
black bars to the right and left.
If a 4:3 picture is increased then it either appears distorted (see image)
or some of the picture is cut off at the top and bottom. This is completely
normal and is not a fault in the wide screen TV.
The resolution of the film being received is often lower than the resolution
of the TV set. The film must therefore be expanded after being received
in order to completely fill the screen. The TV-19PL110D can present 16:9
films from below and up to a resolution of 576ix704 (anamorphic, see
next page) without black bars. If the received resolution of the 16:9 film is
too low (432x704 or lower) then black bars remain at the top and bottom.
Letterbox films (see table) are therefore always displayed on the TV-
19PL110D with black bars at the top and bottom.
Super Cinemascope films are wider than 16:9 films. They are in the format
2.4:1 or 22:9, for example. This is clearly wider than16:9. Therefore, Super
Cinemascope films display black bars at the top and bottom on any HD-
ready TV set. The TV-19PL110D cannot remove the black bars from Super
Cinemascope films.
Picture format and resolution
There is no connection between the picture format and the resolution received. For example, the Super
Cinemascope format can be received in all resolutions, even in the HD resolution1080ix1920. For HDTV
reception too an HD-ready set may display black bars at the top and bottom.
