The Web button in the Quick Nav bar may be have a banner with the word “Disabled” across
it, and the button itself may be grayed out. If that’s the case, access to you your NOOK browser has
been blocked. Some people do that if they worry about their children browsing the Web unattended.
It’s easy to enable access again. For details, see page 325.
• Settings. Tap to change every single setting on your NOOK, including your
WiFi network settings, the sounds, security options, screen brightness,
Reader settings, and plenty more.
The Status Bar
At the very bottom of the NOOK screen, you’ll find the Status bar, which keeps
you up to date with the state of your NOOK, and any alerts and notifications.
For example, if you’re having a problem with your WiFi connection, you get an
update from NOOK Friends (see page 361). The Status bar is visible no matter
what you’re doing—even when you’re reading a book.
The Status bar is divided into two sections. The one on the left sends you alerts
and notifications. Way over on the far right, you see details about the state of
your NOOK, such as its battery level.
Over on the right, what you’ll generally see is straightforward:
• An icon that tells you whether you’ve got a WiFi connection.
NOTE
The WiFi icon tells you not just that you’re connected, but also indicates how strong the
connection is. The more concentric partial circles you see, the greater the signal strength.
• A battery life indicator.
• The time, displayed on a 12-hour clock. If you prefer having it displayed on
a 24-hour clock, change it via the Time Settings screen (page 410).
• A mute symbol, if you’ve muted the NOOK (page 53).
