Driving and operation
Driving hints
The first 1000 km (600 miles)
Driv e your v ehicle at various speed s.
Do not use full throttle. Nev er allow
the engine to labour at low revs.
Make good use of all gears. Depress the
accelerator ped al a ma ximum of around
three quarters of the available p edal travel
in all gea rs.
Do not d riv e faster than three quarters of
maximum speed .
Do not b rake unnec essarily ha rd for the
first 200 km (120 miles).
Never coast w ith engine not running
Many units w ill not function in this situation
(e.g. brake servo unit, power steering).
Driv ing in this ma nner is a danger to
yourself and others.
Brake servo unit
When the engine is not running, the brake
servo unit is no longer effective once the
brake peda l has been depressed once or
twice. Braking effect is not reduced , but
significantly greater force is required for
braking.
Power steering
If the power steering fails or when being
towed with the engine switched off, the
vehicle c an still be steered, but
consid erably more force is required.
Driving in m ountainous terrain
The cooling fan is electrically op erated.
Its cooling power is therefore independent
of the engine speed.
Since a c onsiderab le am ount of heat is
generated at high engine speeds and less
at lower speeds, do not shift down when
climb ing hills while the vehic le is still coping
with the gradient in the hig her gear.
Driving with a roof loa d
N ot permitted.
Sw itching off the engine
When you switch off the engine, fans in
the engine com partment m ay continue
running for a while, to c ool the engine.
If the engine temperature is very high, e.g.
after driving in mountainous terrain, allow
the engine to idle for ap prox. 2 minutes, in
order to prevent heat accumulation.
Vehicles with turbocharged engine:
After running at high eng ine speeds or high
eng ine loads, op erate the engine briefly at
a low load or run in neutral for approx.
30 seconds before switching off, in order
to protec t the turbocharger.
