Hot-swapping or replacing an IOM
Your type of configuration determines whether you must run a version of Data ONTAP containing
certain bug fixes before you hot-swap or replace an IOM, and whether you can perform a
nondisruptive IOM hot-swap or a disruptive IOM replacement.
Before you begin
•
Your multipath HA, single-controller-dual-path, or single-path HA configuration must be
running Data ONTAP 8.1.4 or later, Data ONTAP 8.2.1 or later, or Data ONTAP 8.3 or later.
These versions of Data ONTAP contain required bug fixes described in Bug ID 691240.
NetApp Bugs Online Bug ID 691240
Attention: If you attempt to hot-swap or replace an
IOM on one of these configurations without these
bug fixes, the system might panic and cause a
disruption.
If you cannot upgrade to a version of Data ONTAP
that contains these two bug fixes, then you should
wait for a maintenance period to hot-swap or replace
an IOM.
Note: Single-controller-single-path configurations must be halted to replace an IOM;
therefore, this type of configuration does not require a version of Data ONTAP that contains
the two bug fixes.
•
Your disk shelf model must support the IOM that you are using to replace the failed IOM.
For example, only 6 Gb I/O modules (IOM6) are supported in the DS2246, DS4246, and
DS4486 disk shelves.
About this task
•
Disk shelf (IOM), disk drive, and if applicable, ACP firmware should be current on all disk
shelves in your system before adding new disk shelves, shelf FRU components, or SAS cables.
The best practice is to always have the most current versions of firmware on your system.

Note: Do not revert firmware to a version that does not support the disk shelves, disk shelf
FRU components, or SAS cables in your system.

Your type of configuration determines whether you can perform a nondisruptive IOM hot-swap
or must perform a disruptive IOM replacement:
◦
Multipath configurations (multipath HA or single-controller-dual-path) enable you to hot-
swap an IOM.
◦
Single-path HA configurations (FAS2040, FAS22xx, and FAS25xx) require a takeover and
giveback to replace an IOM.
