Lubricating oil
: choose different grades of lubricating oil according to different ambient
temperatures.
Coolant:
Coolant must be added to the cooling system. Choose the coolant of different freezing
points according to different ambient temperatures.
Starting:
Use an auxiliary starter in winter if necessary. After starting the engine, only operate the
engine with load and high speed when the oil pressure and water temperature are normal.
Battery:
Before the cold season begins, be sure to check the electrolyte liquid level, viscosity and
unit voltage. If the engine is not going to be operated for a long time and under very low
temperatures, the battery should be removed and stored in a warmer room.
Shut-down:
When shutting down the engine in a cold climate, unload the engine first and then
idle for 3 to 5 minutes. The engine should only be shut down after the temperature drops.
3.7 Engine shut-down
Avoid shutting down the engine at full load. Before the shut-down, engine load and speed should
be reduced, and the engine should be operated at idle speed or low-load condition for 3 to
5minutes to allow the piston, cylinder head, liner, bushing and turbocharger have enough time to
be cooled, in order to avoid cylinder and bearing damage. This is particularly important for
turbocharging engines because the bearing and oil seal in the turbocharger are to be affected by
the high temperature of the exhaust gas. When the engine is running, the heat will be transferred
away by the cycling lubricating oil. But when the engine shuts down suddenly, the turbocharger
temperature will increase greatly and cause the bearing get stuck or oil seal failing.
For the engines that there is no antifreeze in the circulating water, drain the cooling water after
shut-down in cold weather to prevent freezing damage to the engine. The draining valve under the
oil cooler can be used to drain the water inside the engine. The drain plug on the radiator should
also be removed to discharge the cooling water in the radiator.
3.8 Power Definition and Operation Conditions of natural gas Engine for
Power Generation
3.8.1 Power Definition
Continuous Power (COP)
It is the maximum power of engine that operated continuously under a constant load with
unlimited yearly operation time. It is the ISO standard power.
Prime Power (PRP)
It is the maximum power of engine that operated continuously under variable load with unlimited
yearly operation time. It is ISO standard power that 10% overload is available.
