As the peak position is identified and the receiver is used in a swinging motion, the peak position (or strongest de
-
tected field strength) is displayed graphically by the green bar graph then slowly decreases as the signal strength
changes. This peak hold representation gives the user a graphical indication of the last identified peak signal.

5.1.1.2
Left/Right Guidance Display
The Left/Right display is tremendously useful in refining the precise location of the target line. Note: User shoudl
always determine the peak signal first. The vertical green bar represents the underground utility using the null an
-
tenna. When shown on the left to the centerline it indicates the target is also to the left. The arrow points towards
the left, directing the user to step in this direction.
Figure 5-4 Left/Right Guidance
When the vertical bar is shown to the right of centerline, it indicates the target is to the right. The arrow points
towards the right, directing the user to step right.
Figure 5-5 Left/Right Guidance
Often the receiver is used in a sweeping motion over the centerline of the tracked utility. When the action in the
Left/Right display is non-symmetric, this can be a warning of the presence of distortion in the field. Care should
be taken to determine the effect of other cables in the locate zone that might be creating distortion by carrying
bleedover and return currents.
