3. Remove the dipstick and observe the fluid level on the dipstick. The fluid level must be between the minimum and
maximum marks. Add fluid if necessary, but do not overfill.
4. Install the dipstick and tighten the T‑handle securely. Do not overtighten.
Checking the Fluid Level When Hot
The process for checking the fluid level when hot is the same as checking the fluid level before operation.
Transmission Oil Evacuation
Premium inboard models from Mercury Marine are equipped with high resolution troll control and also a transmission oil
evacuation system. Use the transmission oil evacuation system as follows:
1. Remove the oil evacuation hose plug. Support the evacuation hose with a back‑up wrench.
2. Connect a suction device to the evacuation hose. The mating port is an SAE‑8 JIC (3/4‑16 UNF thread, 37 deg flare). Use
a back‑up wrench to support the evacuation hose when tightening the connection.
3. Use suction to draw the oil out of the sump, and into an appropriate container. Continue until oil flow ceases.
4. Remove the suction device. Use a back‑up wrench to support the evacuation hose.
5. Install the oil evacuation hose plug. Use a back‑up wrench to support the evacuation hose when tightening the connection.

Seawater System
Draining and Protecting the Seawater System

CAUTION
Water can enter the bilge when the drain system is open, damaging the engine or causing the boat to sink. Remove the boat
from the water or close the seacock, disconnect and plug the seawater inlet hose, and ensure the bilge pump is operational
before draining. Do not operate the engine with the drain system open.
IMPORTANT: The engine must be positioned as level as possible to ensure complete draining of the cooling system.
Drain the seawater system of the power package before cold weather (freezing temperature), seasonal storage, or extended
storage.
