6. It is not necessary for the engine to attain a warm temperature before operation.
7. Do not operate the engine at low speed for extended periods of time.
8. Increase the engine speed gradually. Sudden wide‑open throttle operation may cause a smoky exhaust condition.
Engine Warm‑Up
NOTICE
Engine wear caused by increased friction and limited oil flow is greatest when an engine is cold. Decrease engine wear by
allowing the engine coolant temperature to reach normal operating range before hard acceleration or applying full throttle.
1. After starting, ensure that all instrumentation is functioning properly.
2. Operate the engine at 1,000 to 1,200 RPM until the engine temperature is within the normal operating range of 65–80 °C
(149–176 °F). It is important that the engine be at operating temperatures before applying full load. The warm‑up period
provides time for the lubricating oil to establish a film between moving parts.
NOTE: The rate of throttle‑up is limited to 1200 RPM directly after engine start. An increase of only 50 RPM per second is
allowed for the first 40 seconds thereafter.
3. After the engine has reached operating temperature:
a. The oil pressure should be within the range specified. Refer to
Section 4
‑
Specifications
. Stop the engine if the oil
pressure is not within the range specified.
b. Check the fuel system for leakage from the injection pump, fuel pipes, fuel filter, or fuel lines.
c. Check for oil leakage at the oil filter, oil lines, oil line connectors, and oil pan.
d. Check for coolant leaks. Check the coolant hoses and connection pipes of the heat exchanger, fluid coolers,
aftercooler, water pump, and drain fittings.
4. Locate and correct any problems, or see your Mercury Diesel authorized repair facility if you are unable to determine the
problem.
IMPORTANT: Extended no‑load idling may result in increased exhaust smoke or odor.
Shifting
NOTICE
Shifting into gear at engine speeds above idle will damage the transmission. Shift into gear only when the engine is operating
at idle.
To shift the unit, verify the ERC lever is in neutral. Move the ERC lever forward to shift into forward gear or backward to shift
into reverse. After shifting the transmission, advance the throttle to the desired setting.
Engine Shut Down (Stopping)
1. Place the ERC lever in neutral.
2. Operate the engine at idle speed for several minutes to allow the engine temperature to stabilize.
3. Turn the key switch to the OFF position or press the stop switch button if equipped.
Protecting People in the Water
While You Are Cruising
It is very difficult for a person in the water to take quick action to avoid a boat heading in their direction, even at slow speeds.
21604
Always slow down and exercise extreme caution any time you are boating in an area where there might be people in the water.
Whenever a boat is moving (even coasting) and the gear shift is in neutral, there is sufficient force by the water on the propeller
to cause the propeller to rotate. This neutral propeller rotation can cause serious injury.
