Introduction of the New A-Class, Model Series 176
b
Next to the driving assistance systems already
known in the B-Class, model series 246, the new A-
Class is equipped with the Active Parking Assist
incl. Parking Guidance, which can also support the
driver when semiautomatically pulling out of a
parking space.
The following innovations are now available in the
Active Parking Assist:
• Parking on corners
• Vehicle 1.0 m parking space for
curbside parking
• Activation of PARKTRONIC when rolling
backwards
• Pulling out of parking space assistant
Active Parking Assist incl. Parking
Guidance
The Active Park Assist system can support the
driver when parking at the curb side and on corners.
An ultrasonic measurement system is used to scan
the vehicle's surroundings.
During a journey at speeds of v < 36 km/h ( display
v < 30 km/h) curbside parking spaces on both sides
of the vehicle in the direction of travel are measured
and stored. If a parking space is detected, which in
terms of position and size would be suitable for the
vehicle to be parked in, a message is shown on the
instrument cluster's multifunction display "Activate
Park Assist?". Next to the warning "Observe
surrounding area" a"Start Park Assist?" prompt is
also shown in the multifunction display.
The driver can now press the "O.K." button on the
left multifunction steering wheel button group to
start the semiautomatic parking procedure.
Semiautomatic pulling out of a parking
space
The function is only available if the vehicle was
parked with semiautomatic assistance in a curbside
parking space beforehand. This ensures that the
vehicle is standing parallel to the edge of the road
(e.g. curb). This precondition is required because
the first thing the Active Parking Assist does when
pulling out of a parking space is to reverse the
vehicle straight back.
If the vehicle is not positioned parallel to the edge
of the road, the wheels may then be damaged by
impacting with the curb.
The semiautomatic process of pulling out of a
parking space is activated by setting the turn signal
in the direction in which the parking space is to be
exited. At selector lever position "R" or "D" a "Start
Park Assist?" prompt is shown together with a
graphical display of the direction in which the
parking space is to be exited on the multifunction
display.
The driver can now press the "O.K." button on the
left multifunction steering wheel button group to
start the semiautomatic pulling out of parking
space procedure. The following messages are
displayed on the multifunction display to match the
necessary maneuvering movements :
• "Please select gear range D"
• "Please select gear range R"
The forward and backward movements and the
braking of the vehicle must be authorized by the
driver operating the accelerator or the brake pedal.
The necessary steering movements (full steering
lock left or right) are requested by the parking
system control unit and then automatically realized
by the electric power steering.
Once, with the aid of the Active Parking Assist, the
vehicle has been positioned such that the driver can
then drive straight out of the parking space, the
message "Park Assist Completed – Take over
vehicle" is shown on the multifunction display.
