Introduction of the New E-Class Coupé, Model Series 207
Rear axle
The principle of the lightweight independent multi-
link rear suspension suspended from a rear axle
carrier was selected because of its wheel control
properties. The axle components have been modi-
fied in the interests of greater ride comfort and
lightweight design.
The kinematics and elastokinematics of the axle
have been optimized with regard to responsiveness,
contributing significantly to the improved ride
comfort due to the new layout and the lower
resultant forces.
All models feature a torsion bar mounted directly on
the rear axle carrier in order to reduce the number
of connections to the bodywork.
Another comfort-related feature is the use of an
additional support for the front of the rear axle
carrier on the body, which considerably increases
the rigidity to introduced forces.
The weld seams are treated and all components are
lacquered to protect against corrosion. The rear
axle carrier is additionally covered with an acrylic-
based top coat.
