HART Communication
The CONTOUR supports HART protocol over the 4-20 mA wires. By connecting a 250
Ohm resistor on one of the wires and a HART modem and communication to and from the
scanner can be established from the CONTOUR Configurator software.
NOTE
: Though CONTOUR does support HART protocol over its 4-20 mA wires
using a 250 ohm resistor and a HART modem, unlike other MAGNETROL
products, it is proprietary. CONTOUR does NOT have universal HART driver’s
(i.e., a Device Descriptor (DD) or Device Type Manager (DTM)), and cannot
communicate with typical HART host devices such as an Emerson Model 475
Field Communicator, or PC based host programs such as Emerson’s AMS
Device Manager, or PACTware™. However, the CONTOUR scanner can be
configured, and process variables read, via HART, with the CONTOUR
Configurator program. It is not recommend to perform diagnostics or firmware
updates using HART due to the high amount of data being transmitted/received.
CONTOUR was designed to use RS-485 digital communications instead of
HART, and is the preferred method of transmission.
