10.0
WELD HEAD MAINTENANCE
Periodic cleaning of the Weld Head is necessary to maintain maximum operating efficiency. The standard
maintenance requirement is to keep the unit free of moisture, debris, and other contaminants resulting from
the welding process, that can affect arc starting and weld consistency (i.e.: oil, water, abrasives, etc.).
10.1
Cleaning
DO NOT
use abrasives or lubricants of any kind.
Insulating components can be cleaned with a soft brush and a fast drying solvent, such as acetone
or denatured alcohol.
Drive gear assemblies can be cleaned using a fine wire brush and solvent. The drive gear, bevel
gear, and rotor assembly should be inspected to insure that debris have not damaged the rotor
sprocket lobes and affected the operation of the drive assembly. A fine jeweler’s file can be used to
repair light damage in these areas.
The body can be cleaned by using a cloth or soft brush and solvent.
Note
: Only use stainless steel, as regular carbon steel will ruin the surface passivation)
All parts must be completely dry before reassembly.
Torch Cable Replacement
10.2
Torch Cable Replacement
Should it be necessary, the torch cable can be readily replaced in the field. Torch cables which are
exceedingly worn or which have become damaged can be rebuilt by the factory.
1.
Remove the U-shaped clamp that restrains the torch cable to the Weld Head by removing the two (2)
Allen head screws.
2.
Remove the torch from the pivoting arm assembly by unscrewing the two (2) slotted head screws that
mount the green fiberglass mounting block to the pivoting arm assembly. These screws can be seen
immediately behind the gas cup of the torch. The collet body and gas cup will have to be removed to
gain access to these screws.
3.
If the Weld Head is equipped with a wire feeder. It will be necessary to unsolder the two motor leads
with a soldering iron.
4.
Reverse the previous procedure to reinstall the replacement cable.
10.3
Water Cooler Maintenance/Flushing Procedure for Torch Cable
If a radiator type water cooler is supplied or used with this system, it should be periodically flushed and the
filter in the pump removed and cleaned. In warm weather conditions a quantity of algaecide should be used
to prevent growth occurring in the tank. When used in climates where freezing can be expected, a small
quantity of antifreeze per three gallon of reservoir capacity should provide sufficient freezing protection in
most circumstances. In no case, exceed 50% mix of antifreeze to water, as cooling capacity would be
greatly diminished. (With the Tubemaster and Pipemaster System, we recommend a 50/50 mix of methyl
alcohol and water. This performs well as antifreeze as well as an algaecide.
