Safety Guidelines for Ballast Boxes
Make sure that you purchase the correct ballast box for the lamp you are using. The lamp and the ballast box
must be compatible –if you are not sure, always check with your retailer.
Place your LUMii® ballast box in a well ventilated area, not in a confined space. Ballast boxes generate heat that
must be safely dissipated – for example, a 400 watt ballast box generates 30-40 watts of heat.
Keep ballast boxes away from wet areas. If possible, install the control box outside the growing room. Do not
place ballast boxes near the ceiling – this could be the hottest area.
Check that you have an appropriate fuse or circuit breaker on your power point outlet (these are mandatory!). A
safety earth leakage isolation circuit breaker is also highly recommended.
Screw your lamp into the lampholder on your reflector. Ensure the lamp goes all the way into the socket to
make a good connection.
Plug your ballast box into the power source recommended (in EU use a 220/240 volt, 50Hz power point). Avoid
long extension cords, since a voltage drop may prevent the lamp starting.
If there is a humming noise, do not cover the ballast box. Covering may cause overheating damage to
components, or even fire. If excessive humming is a problem, refer to your retailer. (note: most ballast boxes
“hum” to some extent, especially during start up, which is because of the nature of the product).
Make sure the reflector cord is unwound to prevent it from heating, especially with 600
Watt lamps.
Switch on the lamp at the power point or timer – it will take the lamp about 5 minutes to achieve full
brightness. A restart may take up to 15-20 minutes, as the lamp has to cool before restarting.
Avoid eye contact with the light, since most HID lamps generate some ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Use your HID lamps only for horticultural lighting, not for general-purpose lighting. This is
to avoid accidents due to possible UV exposure, exploding lamps or electric shock. When working on your
plants turn off the grow lights and use a general-purpose light.
When running more than one light from a power point, contactor/relay or a timer, check the running currents
printed on the product label. These values will provide a guide as to how many lights may be run on one power
point or time switch. Do not overload power points or timers – if in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
Observe the following operating precautions. Turn the ballast box off at the power point if:
• Installing a new lamp
• The lamp has stopped functioning
• The lamp is not fitted in the reflector
• Making any alterations to your lighting systems (leaving the power on in these situations, causes high voltage
from the ignitor to stress the insulation in the ballast box, and the external cord and lampholder assembly).
After switching the ballast box off, leave in the mains power plug for a minimum of one minute, to allow the
capacitors to discharge. This will avoid electric shock across plug pins. As an extra safety precaution install
smoke detectors in the grow room or nearby.
Always unplug the ballast box before performing any alterations to your system or replacing/refitting/
relocating lamps.
