Upstream monitoring system UMS
Chapter 20
20.1
Introduction
The Upstream Monitoring System (UMS) is a measuring system consisting of a device in the
headend and one or several handheld devices (also called field devices). The UMS permits to
measure the return path in a DOCSIS network. Two different devices are supported as headend:
•
The first is the
UMS
for the AMA310 Headend UMS device which permits the following
measurements: wobbling (frequency response measurement), TILT measurement (tilted
position measurement), BER measurement, MER measurement, constellation diagram, real-
time spectrum. The measurements can be performed with the DOCSIS modems in operation.
•
The second is the
X16
for the Kronback X16/KWS device which supports the measurements
wobbling, TILT and real-time spectrum, also when the DOCSIS modems are in operation.
The data transmission from the headend to the handheld devices is done via transport stream and
DVB-C modulation. If the headend disposes of a transport stream multiplexer, the UMS data
stream may be added to an existing DVB-C-channel.
Further information may be taken from the Application Note "AN006 - Upstream-Monitoring-System
UMS" on www.kws-electronic.de under "SUPPORT" -> "Application Notes".

Settings on the field device
Before using it with the headend, the DVB-C channel used for data transmission and the relevant
service ID of the data channel have to be set in the field device: The UMS mode is selected via
