Oil circuit
The oil pump
1
pumps the engine oil past the bypass valve
2
through
the oil filter
3
. After the oil filter an oil line branches off to a jet
4
, which
sprays engine oil on the piston-pin bearings and the piston head. The
second oil line conducts the main oil flow into the frame breast pipe
5
,
where the engine oil is cooled. Afterwards the engine oil runs through the
fine screen filter
6
, which filters the finest impurities out of the engine oil.
The cleansed engine oil is pumped through an oil line and the clutch over
into the crankshaft to the conrod bearing
7
and flows off into the crank-
case. Another oil pump
8
extracts the engine oil from the crankcase and
pumps it through the oil duct
9
to the 4th and 5th gears. The engine oil
flows over the gears and into the engine sump. The timing chain
bk
dips
into the oil sump and draws engine oil up to the cylinder head. The engine
oil runs through the hole
bl
to the camshaft
bm
and valves.
Changing the engine oil, oil filter and fine screen filter, ventila-
ting the oil system *
NOTE: a frame breast pipe is integrated in the oil circuit to help cool the
engine oil. When changing the engine oil, remove the fine screen filter,
drain the engine oil out of the breast pipe and ventilate the oil system. If the
oil system is not ventilated or not adequately ventilated, the bearing positi-
ons in the engine will not be adequately lubricated and can lead to engine
damage. We therefore recommend having the oil changed at an authorized
KTM workshop. The oil change must be performed by an authorized KTM
workshop during the warranty period, otherwise the warranty will become
null and void.
Change the engine oil when the engine is at an operating temperature.
WARNING
T
HE ENGINE AND ENGINE OIL ARE VERY HOT AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE
;
BE CAREFUL
NOT TO BURN YOURSELF
.
Park the motorcycle on a level surface.
Remove 5 screws and the engine guard
bn
.
Remove the two plugs
bo
and
bp
and allow the oil to drain into a suitable
vessel. Loosen the fine screen filter
6
with an oil filter wrench and unscrew
by hand.
!
CAUTION
!
D
O NOT REMOVE THE SCREW
A -
THIS IS THE BYPASS VALVE
.
Remove the screw
bq
to allow the engine oil to drain from the frame breast
pipe.
Thoroughly clean the plugs with petroleum and compressed air to remove
any metal abrasion. When the oil is completely drained, clean the sealing
areas and mount the plugs and gaskets. Tighten plug
bo
to 30 Nm and
plug
bp
to 20 Nm. Tighten screw
bq
to 10 Nm.
Clean the sealing area on the breast pipe
br
, fill a new fine screen filter
with engine oil and oil the rubber gasket
bs
. Mount the fine screen filter
and tighten by hand.
Remove the screw cap on the clutch cover, add 1.3 liters of engine oil and
mount the screw cap again.
