802.1Q VLAN 

Tag-based VLAN is an IEEE 802.1Q standard. Therefore, it is possible to create a VLAN across 
different switches (see Figure.1). IEEE 802.1Q Frame Tagging technology will insert a “tag” into 
the Ethernet frames. The tag contains a VLAN Identifier (VID) that indicates which VLAN this 
frame belongs to. Since the switch only has to check the frame’s tag without the need to go 
through the content of the frame, it saves a lot of a switch’s computing resources.
