For ASTM D1478:
Attach one end of a connecting cord of
suitable length to the test rig as indicated
in ASTM D1478 and the other end to the
hook on the load cell rod in the chamber.
Use the DRIVE Switch to position the test
rig and take slack out of the cord,
observing the precautions in ASTM
D1478.
For ASTM D4693:
Using the DRIVE Switch, rotate the test rig
so that the torque arm is positioned
slightly (not more than 3mm) above the
load cell contact but not touching. Do not
position the torque arm by rotating it
relative to the hub.
4. Cold-Soak the Test Rig:
a)
Replace the plexiglass vapor barrier and
close the cover.
b)
Allow the cold chamber to recool to the
test temperature.
c)
Cold-soak the test rig in accordance with
the applicable specification:
ASTM D1478
– 3 hours
ASTM D4693
– 5 hours
5. Start the Torque Determination:
At the end of the cold-soak period, start the
torque determination as follows:
a)
Measure and record the temperature of
the test rig (ASTM D4693).
b)
Turn the DRIVE Switch to the ON position
and allow the unit to operate for the required
test duration. Make the necessary torque
observations as per the test method standard.
6. Remove the Test Rig:
When the test is completed, shut down the
drive unit and remove the test rig. Clean
immediately or place in an oven at 70°C to
preclude rusting (ASTM D4693). Refer to the
applicable
test
method
standard
for
information on cleaning and storage of
bearings and test rigs.
7. Dry the Test Chamber:
After testing has been completed and the
refrigeration system shuts down, allow the test
chamber to return to room temperature before
wiping it dry with a clean cloth. This will
minimize frosting of the chamber and the
cooling coils during the next usage.
5.3 Calibration Procedure
There are two procedures for calibrating the strain
gauges and load cells. Calibration Method “A”
uses an electronic resistance standard to insure
proper calibration of the torque measuring
instrument. This is the primary procedure for
calibrating
. Procedure “B” conforms to ASTM
D4693 and should be used only as a secondary
check after calibration by Method “A”.
NOTE
:
Calibration Procedure “A” is
performed at the manufacturer’s facility and should
be performed on an annual basis thereafter.
Calibration procedure “B” can be performed for
verification purposes.
Load Cell Calibration Method “A”:
1.
Remove the access panel on the right side of
the torque cabinet. This will allow access to
the rear of the strain gauge meters. Remove
the plastic cover on the front of strain gauge
indicator by placing the tip of a jeweler’s
screwdriver under the bottom center of the
bezel and lifting.
2.
Turn on the power to the cabinet and permit
the displays to stabilize. On the left side of
each meter are two set screws. The top one is
the zero adjust and the bottom one is the span
adjustment. Using a jeweler’s screwdriver, set
the meters to read zero using the zeroing
adjustment.
3.
Turn off the main power and connect the 60K
Ohm resistor supplied with the load cell to the
following materials:
Calibration for the right-side (ASTM D4693)
Test Rig:
One end of the resistor is inserted into
Terminal 4 (black wire) and the other end is
inserted into Terminal 6 (green wire).
