5 Operation
5.1 Preparation for Operation
Preparing the ASTM D1478 Test Rig
1.
Follow the procedure outlined in ASTM D1478
for selecting and preparing the test bearing.
Use the supplied bearing spindle and grease
cup to pack the test bearing.
2.
Insert the packed test bearing into the test
housing and secure the clamp cap securely
over the test bearing
Preparing the ASTM D4693 Test Rig
1.
Prepare the bearings for packing by solvent
washing them as per the method and
permitting them to air dry.
NOTE:
New
bearings
must
be
conditioned by rotating them at 1000 RPM at
room temperature for 48 hours under a load of
110 NM.
2.
Pack the bearings with the test grease as
specified in the method using a grease
packer.
3.
Press the bearing cups into the test hub using
the supplied cup fixture and an arbor press.
Be certain that the bearing cups are fully
seated in the housing.
NOTE:
Never use a hammer or any
other object to “knock” the bearing cups into
place. This may result in damage to the test
housing.
4.
Slide the inner bearing onto the spindle
locating the keyway on the shaft with the
notch on the inside of the bearing. Be careful
not to rotate the bearings during assembly.
Next, place the bearing housing on the
spindle. Followed by the outer bearing.
5.
Install the inner compression plate onto the
shaft with the shouldered end facing away
from the hub. Slide on the spring followed by
the outer compression plate with the shoulder
facing the hub. Slip on the washer and thread
on the nut, but do not tighten.
6.
Carefully mount the test assembly in a vertical
position in a vise equipped with soft jaws.
Position the test spindle so that the flat face of
the spindle contacts the jaws. Tighten the vise
just enough to secure the spindle.
7.
Slip on the brass calibration cylinder and
tighten the nut until the compression washer is
flush with the top of the brass cylinder. The
unit now has a 400N load on it.
8.
Slide the thermocouple into the end of the test
rig and tighten the nut. Remove the test rig
from the vise.
9.
Place the test rig in an oven at 70°C for one
hour prior to testing, as per ASTM D4693
specifications.
5.2
Operating Instructions
1. Set the Cold Chamber Temperature:
a)
Turn the POWER Switch to the ON
position, followed by the BLOWER Switch.
b)
Set the temperature by using the
ascending and descending arrows on the
Chamber temperature control.
c)
When the chamber has cooled to the test
temperature as indicated on the chamber
temperature display, allow several minutes for
the
temperature
to
stabilize
before
proceeding.
2. Insert the Test Rig:
a)
Open the cabinet cover and latch the
cover supports in place.
CAUTION:
Never leave the cover open while
the unit is unattended. Injury or damage to
components may occur should the cover
unexpectedly drop. Remove the Plexiglas
vapor barrier.
b)
Insert the test rig onto the appropriate
shaft and fasten in place:
ASTM D1478
– Left
ASTM D4693
– Right
For ASTM D4693: Connect the thermocouple
in the test rig to the plug inside the cold
chamber.
3. Position the Test Rig Relative to the Load
