The ca tegory is displa y-only which is determined by POST (Power On Self Test)
of the BIOS.
Base Memory
The POST will determine the a mount of ba se (or conventiona l) memory insta lled
in the system. The va lue of the ba se memory is typica lly 512K for systems with
512K memory insta lled on the motherboa rd, or 640K for systems with 640K or
more memory insta lled on the motherboa rd.
Extended Memory
The BIOS determines how much extended memory is present during the POST.
This is the a mount of memory loca ted a bove 1MB in the CPU's memory a ddress
ma p.
Other Memory
This refers to the memory loca ted in the 640K to 1024K a ddress spa ce. This is
memory tha t ca n be used for different a pplica tions. DOS uses this a rea to loa d
device drivers in a n effort to keep a s much ba se memory free for a pplica tion
progra ms. The BIOS is the most frequent user of this RAM a rea since this is
where it sha dows RAM.
