CHAPTER 8: APPLICATIONS
8.1
MIDI SYNC APPLICATIONS
8.1A
IED04 As MIDI Timing Master
The IED04 can control several other slave MIDI drum machines or sequencers by turning on
MIDI Clock Out, which sends IED04 timing information down the MIDI line.
1.
Turn on MIDI Clock Out (section 6.6).
2.
Program the slave units to not follow their internal clocks, but to accept external MIDI Clock
and Start/Stop data. Refer to each device's manual to find out how to do this. Enable the
slave's Song Position Pointer if it is available (or it may be available all the time and not need
to be specifically enabled, as is the case with the Alesis HR-16 and MMT-8).
3.
Press PLAY on the IED04. The slave units should start at the same time, and progress at
the same tempo. If the slaves respond to Song Position Pointer, you can start an IED04 Song
at any point, and after a few seconds the slaves will catch up and synchronize from that point
on.
The following diagram shows an IED04 serving as the MIDI system master clock, with an
iDM01 drum machine set as a slave. To slave the iDM01 (or any external device accepting
MIDI in) use a 5-pin MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT of the iED04 to the MIDI IN of the
iDM01.

STRATEGIES FOR ASSEMBLING PATTERNS AND SONGS
Ideally, you should be able to translate your inspirations into tangible form with a minimum
amount of effort. The following tips and techniques help speed up the process of creating
Patterns and Songs.
