General Safety Information
WARNING
Use the information in this manual along with your workplace safety program.
Ensure all personnel become familiar with the location and operation of the controls and features of the compressor.
Ensure a fire extinguisher is located close to the compressor. The extinguisher must be a multipurpose type that is suitable for electrical fires.
Keep the work area clean, uncluttered, ventilated and illuminated.
Review material safety data sheets (MSDS) and store them in a safe place.
Ensure all decals, tags and nameplates are in place and legible. Do not remove.
If the compressor is repainted, protect decals, tags and nameplates from being covered with paint. Remove the protection after painting.
If parts are replaced, ensure any decals, tags and nameplates are also replaced.
Ensure all personnel are able to locate, read, understand and follow all safety precautions and instructions on the compressor and in all manuals. Failure
to comply with safety precautions described in the manuals supplied with the compressor, this manual or any of the decals and tags attached to the
compressor may result in death or serious injury. Manuals may be provided in the form of paper, compact disc (CD) or other media.
Ensure all activities involving installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of the compressor comply with all applicable codes, laws, regulations,
standards, and specifications (local, state, country, federal, etc.). Examples include electrical codes, occupational safety/health regulations, and local
permits.
Ensure all personnel wear personal protective equipment that is appropriate for the task such as safety glasses with side shields, respirator, hearing
protection, cut resistant gloves and safety shoes.
Contact Ingersoll Rand for replacement decals, tags, nameplates or manuals if they become missing, damaged or unreadable. Provide the serial number
of the compressor when ordering replacement nameplates.
Safety Information - When Installing the Product
WARNING
Ensure all activities involving installation of the compressor comply with all applicable codes, laws, regulations, standards, and specifications (local, state,
country, federal, etc.).
Product Inspection
Inspect the shipping package for any signs of shipping damage. Remove shipping material carefully and inspect the compressor for any damage. Pay
close attention to hoses, fittings, brackets, handles, valves, or any other items that attach or protrude from the compressor. Inspect any item that appears
damaged, no matter how slight, and determine if it is safe before installing and operating the compressor.
Handling & Transporting
Use suitable lifting equipment (e.g. forklift) to lift and transport the compressor to the installation site. Ensure the lifting equipment, straps, etc. are capable
of supporting the weight of the compressor. Weight information is printed on a label attached to the shipping container or to the compressor.
Forklift slots are located within the base of most compressors. Ensure the forks are fully engaged on both sides. You may also use a special lifting frame for
a crane or hoist. Use only marked lifting and tie down points.
Do not work on or walk under the compressor while it is suspended.
Installation Site
The standard compressor is not suitable for explosive environments.
Install the compressor securely and on a stable foundation. Remove any risk of movement by suitable means, especially to avoid strain on any rigid
discharge piping.
Provide adequate ventilation if the discharged air is to be ultimately released into a confined space.
Electrical
General Requirements
Ensure electrical installation is performed by a qualified electrician.
Lockout/tagout the main electrical supply to prevent the possibility of applying power to the compressor during installation.
The owner/electrical contractor must size the feeder cables to ensure that the circuit is balanced and not overloaded by other electrical equipment.
Connect the compressor only to electrical systems that are compatible with its electrical characteristics and that are within its rated capacity. Do not
connect to an electrical supply of incorrect voltage and/or frequency.
Install a main line disconnect switch on the incoming line. The compressor is not equipped with an electrical disconnecting device. The owner is
responsible for the design and installation of disconnect, over voltage, short circuit, and overload protection.
Ensure a circuit breaker or fuse safety switch is provided in the electrical supply line leading to the compressor.
Grounding
Ensure the compressor is connected to a grounded, metallic, permanent wiring system or an equipment-grounding terminal or lead. Improper grounding
can result in electrical shock and can cause severe injury or death.
Provide suitable grounds, clearance and lightning arrestors for all electrical components.
Verify grounding connections after initial installation and periodically thereafter to ensure good contact and continuity has been maintained.
