v
To
use
SMP,
obtain
an
SMP-capable
operating
system.
For
a
list
of
supported
operating
systems,
see
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/
us/.
Attention:
To
avoid
damage
and
to
ensure
proper
server
operation,
review
the
following
information
before
you
install
a
microprocessor:
v
The
server
will
not
start
if
microprocessor
socket
1
(system-board
identifier
CPU1)
is
empty.
v
If
two
microprocessors
are
installed
in
the
server,
make
sure
that
both
microprocessors
are
the
same
type,
have
the
same
cache
size,
and
have
the
same
clock
speed.
v
Do
not
install
DIMMs
in
connectors
7
through
12
if
microprocessor
socket
2
(system-board
identifier
CPU2)
is
empty.
The
server
does
not
support
this
configuration.
v
When
you
handle
static-sensitive
devices,
take
precautions
to
avoid
damage
from
static
electricity.
For
information
about
handling
these
devices,
see
“Handling
static-sensitive
devices”
on
page
22.
v
Avoid
touching
the
components
and
gold-pad
connectors
on
the
microprocessor.
Make
sure
that
the
microprocessor
is
completely
and
correctly
seated
in
the
socket.
Incomplete
insertion
might
cause
damage
to
the
system
board
or
to
the
microprocessor.
v
Do
not
touch
the
thermal
grease
on
the
bottom
of
the
heat
sink
or
set
down
the
heat
sink
after
the
plastic
cover
is
removed.
Touching
the
thermal
grease
will
contaminate
it.
This
damages
its
heat-conducting
capability
and
exposes
the
new
microprocessor
to
overheating.
To
install
an
additional
microprocessor,
complete
the
following
steps.
1.
Read
the
safety
information
that
begins
on
page
v
and
“Installation
guidelines”
on
page
21.
2.
Turn
off
the
server
and
all
attached
peripheral
devices.
Disconnect
all
power
cords;
then,
disconnect
all
external
signal
cables
from
the
server.
3.
Remove
the
server
from
the
rack;
then,
remove
the
server
cover
(see
“Removing
the
cover”
on
page
23).
4.
Remove
the
air
baffle
for
microprocessor
2
(see
“Removing
an
air
baffle”
on
page
24).
5.
Locate
the
microprocessor
2
socket
(identifier
CPU2)
on
the
system
board.
