Chapter 8: Defining Agent Policies

IBM Internet Security Systems
Defining Scanning Network Interfaces (ESM Policy)
Introduction
The Enterprise Scanner Module (ESM) policy defines agent-specific scanning preferences
for the scanning network interfaces on an appliance. An ESM policy applies to only one
agent.
Background
information
Before you customize the subtask and perspective settings in this policy, you should fully
understand their impact on the scanning process. These concepts are described in detail in
Chapter 9, "Understanding Scanning Processes in SiteProtector" on page 123.
Subtask sizes for
agents that share
perspective
If you assign multiple agents to one perspective, Enterprise Scanner does not require that
you use the same subtask size for each agent's scanning interface. If you define subtask
sizes based on scanning window sizes, however, you probably want to use the same
subtask sizes for those agent's scanning interfaces.
Procedure
To configure a scanning network interface:
1. In the SiteProtector Console, set up a tab to display agent policies. (See page 74.)
2. On the navigation pane, expand the Enterprise Scanner agent.
3. Select the ESM policy for the agent on the navigation pane.
4. Select the row for port 1, and then click the
Edit selected items detail
button.
5. Configure the scanning port as follows:
Field
Description
Port
A read-only field that designates the number of the port.
Port name
A label for the external (scanning) port.
Maximum IPs per
discovery subtask
a
a. For more information, see “Considerations for Subtask Sizes” on page 111.
The maximum number of IP addresses to discover in a subtask (of a
task for each scan job).
Note:
This value applies to all discovery scans that the agent runs.
Maximum assets per
assessment
subtask
a
The maximum number of assets to scan in a subtask (of a task for
each scan job).
Note:
This value applies to all assessment scans that the agent runs.
Perspective (network
location)
The name of the network location to associate with this scanning port.
Values:
Global
, the default, and any network locations defined in
the Network Locations policy
