Removing and replacing Tier 2 CRUs
You can install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional
charge, under the type of warranty service that is designated for your computer.
The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.
Removing an external SCSI cable
To remove an external SCSI cable, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”
on page 79.
2. Turn off the computer and all peripheral devices. Disconnect all power cords;
then, disconnect all external signal cables from the computer.
3. Remove the computer cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 81).
4. Remove the support bracket (see “Removing the support bracket” on page 83).
5. Open the front adapter-retention bracket and remove the rear adapter-retention
bracket from the PCI-X slots (see “Replacing an adapter” on page 85 for
instructions). You might also have to remove longer adapters for access to the
SCSI connectors on the system board.
6. Remove the standoff screws securing the cable to the chassis.
7. Disconnect the cable from the system board connector.
8. Remove the cable.
9. Remove the standoff screws securing the cable to the chassis.
10. Disconnect the cable from the system board connector.
11. Remove the cable.
Replacing an external SCSI cable
To install an external SCSI connector on the rear of the computer, install an external
SCSI interface option. For a list of supported external SCSI interface options for the
computer, go to http://www.ibm.com/pc/; then, select your country and navigate to
the list of options for the computer.
The external SCSI interface option contains a SCSI cable with a connector at one
end and on the other end another connector or an expansion-slot cover with an
embedded connector.
To install and route the SCSI cable, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the computer and all peripheral devices. Disconnect all power cords;
then, disconnect all external signal cables from the computer.
2. Remove the computer cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 81).
3. Remove the support bracket (see “Removing the support bracket” on page 83).
4. Open the front adapter-retention bracket and remove the rear adapter-retention
bracket from the PCI-X slots (see “Replacing an adapter” on page 85 for
instructions). You might also have to remove longer adapters for access to the
SCSI connectors on the system board.
5. If you are removing an existing SCSI cable:
a. Remove the standoff screws securing the cable to the chassis.
b. Disconnect the cable from the system board connector.
c. Remove the cable.
