Remote Mirroring
DR550 now includes the option of replicating archive data from one DR550 to another. This
replication is done between the DS4100 controller in the primary DR550 and the DS4100 controller
in the secondary DR550. The replication is done synchronously, thus creating a real time copy in
the secondary site. A failure in the primary site would allow the users to bring up the secondary site
and continue with archiving. When ordering the replication option, several additions will be included
in the DR550. The additions apply to both the primary DR550 and the secondary DR550. The
additions include a larger switch (2005-B16 with 12 ports active instead of the 2005-B16 with 4 or 8
ports active), additional fibre channel cables, and the Enhanced Remote Volume Mirroring feature
for the DS4100 controller (manufacturing will install and enable the premium keys required).
Additional zoning will be setup for the larger switch.
Note: Data Replication using DS4100 Enhanced Remote Mirroring is only available for
configurations ranging from 5.6 TB to 44.8 TB. No DS4100 based data replication is currently
available for the 89.6 TB configurations or for configurations that extend beyond 44.8 TB.
Remote mirroring requires feature code 7355 to be installed on the DS4100 (disk controller). This is
done in the factory. This feature enables the premium keys associated with remote mirroring.
Enabling remote mirroring requires some changes in the standard DR550. A larger switch is
required (16 ports rather than 8 ports). Additional cabling is needed between the DS4100 controller
and the switch. One of the switch ports must be designated at an e-port (ISL). All of these changes
are done at the factory when the remote mirroring function is specified in the order.
Management Network Environment
It is mandatory, that the managing host (that is the host or workstation used to manage the
Storage Server using the DS4000 Storage Manager software) can simultaneously access the
primary and secondary Storage Server through the Ethernet (IP) network. In other words,
make sure that Ethernet ports on each Storage Server are on the same subnet or part of a
Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.
Zoning diagrams (single and dual node)
For single node configurations, the SAN zoning will be setup in the factory as shown below. Please
note that zone 2 is not used in a single node configuration. Zone 3 is for tape and should not be
modified. Zones 4 & 5 are used for remote mirroring.
