Section 2: Inspecting the Device Locations
This section helps you determine whether the UTP wiring in the work areas is
suitable for use with the 7299.

Is there a twisted pair available for each device?
Each device requires one twisted pair of UTP wire. If the work area
does not have an available pair, you must install new twisted-pair
wiring.
Ø
YES
Ø
NO
Is the twisted pair that is used for data transmission free of stubs
and bridge taps?
Stubs and bridge taps can interfere with data transmission. Before
you use the UTP cable for data transmission, you must remove all
the stubs and the bridge taps.

Ø
NO
Is there a modular jack available for each device?
The cable from the device is plugged into a RJ11 or RJ45 modular
jack.

Are all the wiring pins for data jacks wired the same way throughout
the network?
For the network to operate correctly, you must maintain a
consistent wiring scheme throughout the network. For information
about maintaining consistent wiring, see Chapter 5, “Midrange
Device Connectivity,” and Chapter 6, “Cables and Baluns.”
Section 3: Inspecting the UTP/FTP Wiring
This section helps you determine whether your UTP wiring is suitable for use with a
7299.

Do you own the wiring in your establishment?
or
If you do not own the wiring, can you obtain the owner's permission
to use the spare pairs?
If you do not own the wiring, you must either obtain permission
from the owner to use the spare twisted pairs or install new
Category 3, 4, or 5 wiring. If the owner of the existing wiring gives
you permission to use the twisted pairs, ask for the wiring
schedules. You need accurate wiring schedules to install a data
network.

Does the existing or the new Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP cabling meet
the specifications that are listed in Chapter 6, “Cables and Baluns”?
If your wiring does not meet the specifications, install new UTP
wiring that meets the specifications. If your existing wiring meets
the specifications, you can use the cable with run distances up to
the maximum lengths specified in Chapter 6, “Cables and Baluns.”
