26 Hydro-View User Guide HD0531 Rev 2.0.0
Ideally, sensors on a RS485 network should be connected in a daisy chain arrangement, as
shown here:
In practice, this arrangement is hard to achieve, so sensors may be wired using very short
stubs:
Although it may appear simpler,
wiring in a star configuration with
each sensor wired back to the
Hydro-View should be avoided.
4 Cables
4.1
Sensor Cable
The sensor must be connected using an extension cable made up from a suitable length of
two pairs twisted (4 cores total) screened (shielded) cable with 22 AWG, 0.35mm
2
conductors.
It is recommended that a high quality cable with good braid screen and also a foil screen is
used in order to minimise the possibility of interference. Recommended cable types are
Belden 8302 or Alpha 6373.
For optimum performance (and to comply with relevant safety regulations) all cables,
including power and communications cables, must be screened and the screen must be
connected to earth at the sensor end only.
The cable from the sensor to the control unit must be distanced from any heavy equipment
and associated power cables, particularly the power cable mixers or bin gates. Failure to
separate the cables can lead to signal interference.
