Cells and nPartitions
An nPartition comprises one or more cells working as a single system. Any I/O chassis that is attached to a
cell belonging to an nPartition is also assigned to the nPartition. Each I/O chassis has PCI card slots, I/O
cards, attached devices, and a core I/O card assigned to the I/O chassis.
On the server, each nPartition has its own dedicated portion of the server hardware which can run a single
instance of the operating system. Each nPartition can boot, reboot, and operate independently of any other
nPartitions and hardware within the same server complex.
The server complex includes all hardware within an nPartition server: all cabinets, cells, I/O chassis, I/O
devices and racks, management and interconnecting hardware, power supplies, and fans.
A server complex can contain one or two nPartitions, enabling the hardware to function as a single system or
as multiple systems.
