Electrostatic Discharge Information
Caution
ESD can damage or destroy electronic comp onen ts. W ork at static-safe
w orkstations when servicing assem blies that include electronic comp onen ts.
Figure 1-5 sho ws an example of a static-safe w orkstation with t w o com binations of ESD
protection: conductiv e table mat with wrist strap; conductiv e o or mat with heel strap. Use
these t w o com binations together. The \Static-Safe Accessories" section pro vides lists of
accessories.

Reducing ESD Damage
The following suggestions help reduce ESD damage that can o ccur during instrumen t test and
service.
PC Board Assemblies and Electronic Components
W ork at a static-safe w orkstation.
Store or transp ort in static-shielding con tainers.
Do not use erasers to clean edge connector con tacts. Erasers generate static electricit y and
remov e gold plating. Clean with lint-free cloth and a solution of 80% electronics-grade
isopropyl alcohol and 20% deionized w ater.
