SERVICING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR
TRIM TAB ADJUSTMENT
The trim tab compensates for “torque
steer,” which is a reaction of the
outboard motor to propeller rotation.
If uncompensated, torque steer would
make the outboard motor tend to turn
to one side.
When the trim tab is correctly
adjusted, steering effort is equal in
either direction.
If steering effort is unequal, remove
the gear case grommet and loosen the
trim tab bolt then adjust the angle of
the trim tab. Retighten the trim tab
bolt and reinstall the gear case
grommet securely.
If less effort is required to make left
turns, move the back of the trim tab
left.
If less effort is required to make right
turns, move the back of the trim tab
right.
Adjust the trim tab in small
increments, and retest steering effort
with the boat evenly loaded and
running at cruising speed.
