SNMP alerts
A management information base (MIB) is a specification that defines management information and events. The
management information consists of the system configuration, field-replaceable unit (FRU) information, and
environmental information. The events are alert (SNMP trap) information that is generated when an environmental sensor
trips a threshold. For example, a fan failure trips a threshold. The MIB definitions include the RMC and the server itself.
The management software uses the MIB to convert low-level SNMP variables to readable names, such as
CPU2_TEMP
.
The RMC and the BMCs manage SNMP alerts, with the RMC receiving the SNMP alerts that the BMCs generate.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise also supports the Redfish standard, with Redfish Alerting and Eventing available for
subscription as well. Selected events are sent over the network toward specified event receivers. The event receivers send
a subscription request to the RMC/BMC containing the types of event that they are prepared to receive and process.
Setting up a client to receive these alerts is done according to the DMTF.org Redfish standard. You can use standard
redfish clients, for example
Redfishtool
, to monitor and manage the RMC/BMC. For the richest monitoring
experience, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends HPE OneView (
http://hpe.com/go/oneview). HPE OneView uses
the Redfish alerting and eventing, rather than SNMP.
