To align tailstock to spindle centerline:
1. Use precision level to make sure bedway is
level from side to side and from front to back.
— If bedway is not level, correct this condition
before continuing with this procedure (refer
to
Leveling section in this manual).
2. Center drill both ends of a piece of round
stock, then set it aside for use in
Step 5.
3. Use another piece of round stock to make a
dead center. Turn it to a 60° point, as illus-
trated below.
8. Use calipers to measure both ends of work-
piece.
— If test stock is thicker at tailstock end, move
tailstock toward front of lathe

9. Repeat Steps 6–8 until desired accuracy is
achieved.
4. Install center in tailstock.
5. Attach lathe dog to test stock from Step 2,
then mount it between centers, as shown
below.

6. Turn 0.010" off stock diameter.
7. Mount test or dial indicator so that plunger is
on tailstock quill.
