TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM

PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTION   

Engine will not 
start, or fails to 
keep running.

1. Fuel tank is empty.

2. Choke is OFF.

3. Air cleaner is plugged or dirty.

4. Spark plug wires are loose or 

disconnected.

5. Spark plugs are failing.

6. Dirty fuel filter.

7. Fuel system is contaminated.

1. Fill tank with fuel.

2. Move choke lever to ON.

3. Clean or replace air cleaner element.

4. Seat wires to spark plug.

5. Install new spark plugs.

6. Replace fuel filter.

7. Contact dealer.

Starter does not 
run or engine 
turns slow.

1. Dead battery.

2. Corroded or loose electrical 

connections.

3. Defective relay or switch.

1. Charge or replace the battery.

2. Check electrical connections for positive 

contact.

3. Contact dealer.

Abnormal 
vibration.

1. Engine mounting bolts are loose.

1. Tighten engine mounting bolts.

Engine 
overheats.

1. Engine load is excessive.

2. Crankcase oil level is low or high.

3. Plugged cooling fins or air 

passages. Low coolant (diesel).

1. Reduce ground speed.

2. Add or remove oil to crankcase.

3. Remove obstruction from cooling fins and 

air passages. Add coolant (diesel).

Engine loses 
power.

1. Engine load is excessive.

2. Air cleaner is plugged or dirty.

3. Crankcase oil level is low.

4. Engine overheating.

5. Spark plugs are failing.

6. Dirty fuel filter.

7. Fuel system is contaminated.

1. Reduce ground speed.

2. Clean or replace air cleaner element(s).

3. Add oil to crankcase.

4. Check airflow or coolant. Remove 

obstruction from cooling fins and air 
passages. Add coolant (diesel).

5. Install new spark plugs. 

6. Replace fuel filter - gasoline. 

Clean fuel filter - diesel.

7. Contact dealer.

Unit does not 
drive

1. Hydraulic activator not engaged.

2. Parking brake engaged.

3. Hydraulic fluid level low.

4. Hydraulic pump disconnected from 

engine crankshaft.

1. Engage hydraulic activator switch.

2. Disengage parking brake.

3. Contact dealer.

4. Check and repair any damaged parts.

Attachment runs 
slowly

1. Not enough power to attachment 

hydraulics.

2. Hydraulic oil cooler dirty.

1. Turn traction selector knob completely 

clockwise.

2. Blow out oil cooler with compressed air.

Engine runs 
roughly when 
hydraulic 
activator switch 
is engaged.

1. Auxiliary hydraulic control is not in 

neutral position.

1. Move auxiliary hydraulic control to neutral 

position.

Engine smokes 
while running.

1. Crankcase is overfilled.

2. Air cleaner dirty.

1. Drain crankcase oil to full mark.

2. Replace air cleaner.

Attachment 
does not run

1. Parking brake engaged.

2. Hydraulic activator not engaged.
