SAFETY
3.1 General Safety Instructions
Information and instructions attached directly on the
Sonnenschein Lithium Material Handling Battery sys-
tem must always be followed. These instructions
contain basic information and guidance to be noted
and followed during operation and maintenance and
must be read by all personnel.
The GNB Lithium-ion battery system may not be
operated without precise knowledge of these Installa-
tion and Operating Instructions or without strict adher-
ence to all safety instructions. Knowledge of the con-
tents of the Installation and Operating manual is a
fundamental requirement to protect people from dan-
ger, to avoid errors and to operate the system safely
and fault-free.
The Installation and Operating Instructions must be
accessible to operating and maintenance personnel at
all times. Each person given the task of operating or
maintaining the system must have read and under-
stood the instructions.
The health and safety information refers to the current
directives of the European Union. In other countries
the relevant laws and regulations must be noted and
followed:

INSTALLATION/OPERATION
Please find the minimum and maximum operating
temperatures in table 1.
4.1 Quick start Guide
• Check the battery housing, the cables and con-
nectors for damages.
• Switch the battery on by pressing the ON/OFF
button for one second, observe the button. In
normal operation the button flashes green once in
5 seconds. Flashing red color indicates a warning
or failure state. Please refer to the section 4.4
Warning and Alarms in this case.
• At the delivery state the battery SOC display
should indicate SOC> 90%
• IMPORTANT: The battery must be fully charged
prior to first usage.
The Sonnenschein Lithium Material Handling Battery
can communicate with the vehicle via the CAN bus or
an external GNB display.
4.2 Low Discharge Warning
At a discharged level of <10% SOC, the integrated
buzzer pulses steadily. This an indication to the oper-
ator that the battery must be charged immediately
4.3 Zero SOC Stop
If the operator continues to operate the battery below
10% SOC and the SOC reaches 0%, the buzzer will
sound an alarm with increased frequency and after
approx 20 seconds, the battery will stop. The battery
can be restarted by pressing the reset button or con-
necting to the charger. The battery should be driven
to the charger immediately. If ignored, the battery
needs to be reset by an Exide Service Technician and
will incur a service charge.
WARNING:
Sudden cut off of the battery can lead to damage
and hazards, such as spontaneous stop of the
vehicle.
The reset button can be pressed once to get the
vehicle to the charger. After that, the battery
remains turned off in order to avoid further dam-
age. The vehicle now has to be towed to the
charger with auxiliary means.
ATTENTION:
If the battery has shut off due to a low discharge
level, it must be charged immediately.
Storage of a battery in a low discharge state for
long periods is to be avoided. Failure to do so
can lead to irreversible battery damage.
4.4 Charging
The Sonnenschein Lithium Material Handling Battery
may only be charged with an GNB certified battery
charger.
4.5.2. Acoustic signals
An alarm buzzer will be active under following condi-
tions:
• Under Voltage
• Over Voltage
• Over current
• Under temperature
• Over temperature
• Communication error
• Safety line error
However, if the above mentioned warnings continue,
the Battery Management System will shut down the
battery. If this occurs, please push the on/off button to
drive to the charger. If driving is no longer possible,
stop working and contact Exide Service.
Please also refer to the Installation and Operating
Instructions for the GNB certified battery charger.
The battery can be placed on charge for extended
periods – up to 4–5 days. If the battery will not be
used for a longer period or unplugged (e.g. vacation
periods) then it should be removed
and the battery
should be switched off.
To optimise battery capacity and performance we
recommend a maintenance charge every week. The
battery should be charged to 100% and left on charge
over night if possible.
The battery can be opportunity charged during paus-
es in work e.g. break, lunch, coffee etc. This will
increase your productivity. The battery should be fully
charged whenever it is convenient in the duty cycle.
The Sonnenschein Lithium Material Handling Battery
system is charged as follows:
• Bring the vehicle to the GNB certified battery
charger.
• Check that all cables and plug-in connections are
in working condition.
• For charging, the charging plug must be connect-
ed with the battery socket or if available Easy
charge socket. During charging pause the vehicle
is electronically disconnected from the GNB bat-
tery system.
• If charging is finished, or the required charge level
has been reached, press the button on the char-
ger and disconnect the connector. The charger
pause button should still be pressed before dis-
connection.
• Failure to stop the charger before disconnecting
the battery could cause damage to the connector
thus affecting the performance and reliability of
the battery. Damage to connectors is not covered
under warranty
• GNB certified chargers are equipped to control
and terminate the charge cycle automatically.
After charging, the vehicle can go back to work
immediately. A rest phase or cooling is not
required for the Sonnenschein Lithium Material
Handling Battery.
Fast green blinking after power on/reset means „booting up“, confirming the CAN communication to each module
If the LED remains fast blinking green or blinks fast red please contact your local service engineer
