PIPETTING LIQUIDS OF VARIOUS DENSITIES
It is possible to compensate for solutions hav-
ing densities much different to that of water by
setting the digital micrometer slightly higher or
lower than the required volume. The amount of
compensation must be obtained empirically.
For example, when using a 8X200 Pipetman to
pipette eight channels of 100 µl of a dense solution,
you determine gravimetrically that the volume de-
livered is actually 85 µl. Try setting the digital micro-
meter to 115 µl and repeat the measurements. If the
volumes delivered are still not sufficiently close to
100 µl, make another slight micrometer adjustment,
corresponding to the direction of the error.
Very dense or viscous liquids, or volatile liquids
may not be suitable for air displacement
pipetting. Use Gilson Microman
®
positive dis-
placement pipettes for these liquids.
4. GILSON DIAMOND TIPS
Gilson tips are made to the highest specifications,
strict quality control is maintained throughout the
manufacturing process:
• They are process clean, meeting today’s
requirements for dye-free materials (avoiding
the possibility of contamination).
• Optimized shape (revised collar for optimum
sealing, thin walls, and fine point), making them
easier to mount, more flexible, with no vortexing,
and improved precision.
• They are free from even microscopic defects,
especially at the orifice. All surfaces are smooth
and hydrophobic, thereby avoiding the
excessive retention of liquids that causes
poor accuracy and a lack of precision.
• Mold and cavity references are marked on
the collar, ensuring the traceability for quality
assurance purpose.
• They form an air-tight seal with the tip-holder,
preventing the leaks that cause poor accuracy
and a lack of precision.
