IGNITION SYSTEM 17
DESCRIPTION
The ignition system is of the capacitive discharge type.
The system is made up of a magneto flywheel, CDI control unit and an
HT ignition coil. The voltage generated by the coil is stored in the
condenser.
The signal generated by the pick-up windings is sent to the control unit
that will discharge the current stored in the condenser into the coil’s pri-
mary windings; a high voltage pulse is generated in the coil’s secondary
windings that will generate the spark in the spark plug.
Magneto flywheel
The magneto flywheel consists of a condenser charge windings and a
pick-up coil to generate the activation signal for the CDI control unit.
CDI control unit
The CDI control unit consists of a condenser, pulse generator
(connected to the flywheel’s pick-up windings), ignition advance
circuit (operating from the signal coming from the pick-up) and
condenser discharge circuit.
HT coil
Consists of primary and secondary windings.
Spark plug
Champion A5 YC or: NGK B8EA
The ignition advance cannot be adjusted because there aren’t any
adjustment devices.
If the ignition advance is faulty, check the ignition control unit, ignition
coil and alternator; replace any defective parts.
