Interchange Configuration
An interchange configuration provides the bidirectional connection of multiple channels (Figure 2-5).

2.4 Protection Switching Applications
2.4.1
Point-to-Point Systems
A point-to-point system is typically used to provide backup paths for T1 signals. A T1 signal on the
incoming path is routed to the backup path when the primary path fails. During normal operation a
DCS monitors the status of the primary path. The DCS switches to the backup T1 on detection of

Loss of frame synchronization
●
Loss of data (carrier loss)
●
Excessive bit errors
●
Detection of remote alarm
When the failure is restored, the T1 signal is automatically re-routed back to the primary path. The
switch back to the primary path has an added delay to prevent oscillation. Figure 2-6 shows a
schematic of a point-to-point system before a failure, and Figure 2-7 shows one after a failure.
