5.3 Problems & Evaluation
The following table describes a number of common symptoms and possible causes. Use this table
together with section
5.2 Troubleshooting Flowchart
for problem analysis.

Burner flame soft – lazy
tip, yellow.
Not enough air mixing with gas.
May need to adjust burner air
shutter to increase air flow.
Incorrect gas pressure.
Confirm gas pressure to Rating
Plate.
Flames lift off burner
ports.
Too much air mixing with gas.
May need to adjust burner air
shutter to reduce air flow.
Flashes back in burner.
Incorrect gas pressure.
Confirm gas pressure to Rating
Plate.
“Pop’s” excessively
when turned off.
Delayed Ignition or
Burner will not ignite
Burner ports plugged.
Examine burner.
Electrode out of position or
damaged.
Examine electrodes visually.
Gas valve seized or restriction in
valve or orifice.
Check gas valve, orifice.
Ignition module failed.
Verify module is sparking (24”/36”
Units).
Verify module is sparking on
the same side as gas is flowing
(48”/60” Units).
Incorrect gas pressure.
Confirm gas pressure to Rating
Plate.
Unit over gassed or incorrect
orifice size.
Check gas pressure and orifice
size.
Temperature too hot,
too much heat, over-
fired
Too much fuel to burners.
Verify gas type for unit and
regulator.
Check regulator pressure.
Temperature variation
Unit is extremely out of level.
Check if unit is leveled.
Check if grease pooling.
Abnormal atmospheric pressure/
air-cross-currents / excessive
drafts / negative air pressure in
kitchen.
Evaluate the air movement,
the ventilation system, and the
location of the unit in the kitchen.
Temperature too low,
too little heat, under-
fired
Not enough fuel to burners.
Verify gas type for unit and
regulator.
Check regulator pressure.
Side shield not installed.
Check removable side shields.
Blocked gas valve (particularly
on LOW setting).
Evaluate Burner flames.
Excessive draft.
Evaluate the ventilation system.
