 INTRODUCTION

The Little Giant simplex control panel is designed specifically for use with the 2-horsepower
Little Giant Grinder Pump, GP-M231/GP-M201. Complete instructions are provided herein for
the installation and operation of the residential 230/208 VAC control panel. Properly installed,
the control panel provides fully automatic or manual control of the grinder pump. The panel
should be installed by a qualified electrician or technician, with strict adherence to the National
Electrical Code (NEC), as well as all state or provincial and local codes.
The control panel is equipped with a high water alarm system which activates when the water
level in the basin or sump rises to a pre-determined level. The alarm system includes a flash-
ing red light mounted on the top of the panel enclosure, as well as an audible alarm buzzer
which can be silenced with the press of an externally located button. The alarm system will
automatically re-set when the high level condition is corrected. The control panel is equipped
with heavy duty electrical components to ensure longevity and reduce the need for repairs
and maintenance. The enclosure is weatherproof to allow outdoor installation and has a flam-
mability rating which meets UL 94V-0. Figure 1 shows the front of the control panel.
The components inside the control panel include pump circuit breaker, magnetic motor
contactor, adjustable overload relay, pump hand-off-auto (HOA) switch, alarm silence button,
pump run indicator light, start and run capacitors, start relay, pump terminal block, float switch
terminal block, alarm silence relay, control circuit fuse, ground lugs and all necessary wiring
and brackets. To assist in making proper connections, the pump terminal block is coded and
labeled (B – black, R – red, W – white) and the float switch terminal block is numbered (see
Connections). The control panel has the third party safety approvals of UL and cUL.
Read and follow all instructions and safety guidelines thoroughly before installing or operat-
ing the control panel system. Failure to follow the instructions could result in serious bodily
injury or death and/or property/pump damage.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

WARNING: DISCONNECT ALL POWER BEFORE INSTALLING OR SERVICING THE
PUMP OR THE CONTROL PANEL!

 1.  Read and follow all safety guidelines and installation/operation instructions. Save

these instructions for future use and users.

 2.  Follow all national, state or provincial, and local building, plumbing and electrical

codes and ordinances.

  3.  Do not install or operate the control panel while standing on a wet or damp surface

or in water.

  4.  Do not smoke, use sparkable electric devices or open flame when installing or operat-

ing the control panel.

  5.  Be sure that the control panel back plate and the power and pump cords are properly

grounded.

  6.  Never touch any electrical component or wires once power has been supplied to the

incoming power terminal block.

  7.  Do not place tools or other objects on the top of the control panel when installing or

operating the control panel.

  8.  Do not energize the control panel if an electrical component is damaged or appears dam-

aged. Contact Little Giant technical support.

  9.  Do not energize the control panel if any of the control panel wires are disconnected or

appear loose, frayed or damaged. Contact Little Giant technical support.

 10.  Extreme care should be taken in the cutting or drilling of of any holes in the control

panel for wires or cable access. Make sure no control panel components are damaged

by the saws, drills or other tools.

 11.  Lock the control panel to prevent unauthorized persons or those who may be unfamil-

iar with its operation from opening the control panel.

 12.  Do not install the control panel in locations classified as hazardous in accordance with

the most recent National Electrical Code.

 13.  In any installations where property damage and/or personal injury might result from

inoperative pumps or sump/basin overflow due to power outages, discharge line

blockage or any other reason, a backup system(s) and/or alarm should be used.

 14.  Follow all installation/operation instructions and safety guidelines accompanying the

grinder pumps and/or basin system.

 15.  Make sure no person is touching the pump(s) or near the cutters when testing system

operation.

LOCATING THE CONTROL PANEL

The control panel should be mounted in a convenient location, preferably close to the pump
installation. The location should allow clear visibility of the alarm light. Avoid locating the
control panel in wet locations, such as beneath sweating pipes or faucets, such that the
user or installer or any necessary tools will not get wet. The surface on which it is mounted
should not be subject to substantial vibrations. Follow the National Electrical Code and all
local and state or provincial codes.

MOUNTING THE CONTROL PANEL

The control panel has four corner-located mounting holes. The control panel should be
securely mounted to a wall or secure vertical structure, using the mounting tabs provided.
Do not mount in a non-vertical position, as this could affect the start relay operation. Anchors
should be used with the mounting screws if the vertical structure is masonry or concrete.
The panel should be mounted approximately 5’ above the floor or ground, as measured to
the bottom of the panel. Mount the panel such that the door can be easily opened and the
lockable latches are readily accessible.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT UTILITY SUPPLIED POWER UNTIL ALL CONNECTIONS
AND CHECKS HAVE BEEN MADE.

The power supply for the control panel must be the proper voltage and within National
Electric Code (NEC) allowable limits. Simplex grinder pump control panel requires 230 VAC
or 208 VAC. The power supply conductors should be properly sized for the maximum allow-
able current to the control panel and capable of handling any voltage drops which might
occur with long service runs.
The pump power requirements are a single-phase, grounded 230/208 VAC supply. To ensure
that no other appliances or devices lose power if the pump short circuits, an isolated circuit
with over-current protection is recommended for the pump power supply.
The control circuitry requires a single-phase 120 VAC (115 VAC, nominal) supply with a
neutral wire and a ground wire. The 120 VAC power supply should be from an overcurrent
protected source and be in accordance with the NEC and all local and state or provincial
codes. Remove the jumper wire from L1 to 2 if supplying separate 120 VAC power.
Two ground lugs are provided on the control panel back plate for connection of all ground
wires. The neutral provides the current path for the 120 VAC control and alarm circuitry.

NEVER

connect the neutral wire to the back plate ground lugs.

The control panel does not have access holes or knockouts provided, in order to allow user
flexibility for determining the power entry. A hole should be cut for the 230 VAC or 208 VAC
supply and the 120 VAC supply. Weathertight cable clamp connectors should be used at
the access points and all debris removed from the control panel after cutting.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

IMPORTANT:

PRIOR TO MAKING ANY CONNECTIONS, MAKE CERTAIN THAT BOTH

THE HOA SWITCH AND THE PANEL CIRCUIT BREAKERS ARE SWITCHED TO THE “OFF”
POSITION. REFERENCE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND THE ELECTRICAL SCHEMATIC
SHOWN IN FIGURE 3 & 4 AND INCLUDED WITH THE CONTROL PANEL.
Figure 3 shows the pump power circuitry and the control power circuitry.

NOTE:

 The over-

load relay current dial is preset at the factory to 14 amps. Little Giant grinder pumps are
internally protected with a thermal protector integral with the motor, per NEC 430-32(a)2. An
overload relay is provided in the control panel for extreme case redundant overload protec-
tion and should not be considered the primary overload protection.

NOTE:

THE SYSTEM DOES NOT INCLUDE CABLES THAT RUN FROM THE JUNCTION

BOX TO THE CONTROL PANEL. If a junction box is used, these cables must be provided
by the installer and should be in accordance with the National Electric Code and state or
provincial and local codes. Connections for the pump power cord and the float switches
consist of six terminals for the three float switches and four terminals for the pump power
cable. The float switch terminals are labeled and numbered, while the pump power cable
uses B for black, R for red and W for white.
