
3. Place pretensioner on a flat surface in remote area (such as parking lot or field) in such a way that moving
parts are not contacting surface. Remain at least 20 feet away from pretensioner. Deploy pretensioner by
touching loose ends of both wires to 12-volt battery terminals.
4. If successful, a loud noise will be heard. Allow at least 10 minutes for cooling before approaching
pretensioner. Pretensioner is now inoperative. If pretensioner does not deploy, pretensioner is faulty.
Contact vehicle manufacturer for further instructions on disposal procedures.

CLOCKSPRING
Removal
1. Before proceeding, See
AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
. Clockspring is located on steering
column between steering wheel and combination switch. Disable air bag system. See
DISABLING
SYSTEM
under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Leave negative battery cable
disconnected.
2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See
DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
. Ensure front wheels are
in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See
STEERING WHEEL
. Apply 2 strips of tape
across clockspring assembly to prevent accidental rotation. See
Fig. 3
. Twist tilt wheel handle and shank
and remove (if equipped).
3. Remove 3 screws and lower steering column shroud. Position ignition switch lock cylinder in RUN
WARNING:
Failure to follow service precautions may result in air bag deployment
and personal injury. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After
component replacement, ensure proper system operation. See SYSTEM
OPERATION CHECK .
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems
may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer
systems have completed a relearn cycle. See Computer Relearn
Procedures in the Reference Information section.
WARNING:
Personal injury is possible. Operating vehicle with improperly centered
clockspring may damage clockspring, and in the event of collision, cause
air bag deployment malfunction. If clockspring rotor has moved or if
unsure of rotor position, perform clockspring centering procedure. See
CLOCKSPRING CENTERING under ADJUSTMENTS.
