The gain corresponds to the average value, for the
paths in operation, of the attenuation of ultrasonic
waves through the fluid.
The acceptable values go from -2 dB (not very
attenuated signal; risk of saturation above) to -45 dB
(strongly attenuated signal; risk of interference below)
