Preface
XII
On the Road
In addition to the general safety and maintenance suggestions in this
preface, and Chapter 8: Troubleshooting, keep these points in mind:
Hand-carry the notebook.
For security, don’t let it out of your sight. In some areas, computer
theft is very common. Don’t check it with “normal” luggage. Bag-
gage handlers may not be sufficiently careful. Avoid knocking the
computer against hard objects.
Beware of Electromagnetic fields.
Metal detectors & X-ray machines
These devices can damage the computer, hard disk, floppy disks, and
other media. They may also destroy any stored data - Pass your com-
puter and disks around the devices. Ask security officials to hand-in-
spect them (you may be asked to turn it on).
Note
: Some airports also scan luggage with these devices.
