ECOA903 SNOW AND ICE SENSOR FOR GUTTERS
INTRODUCTION
The ECOA903 is a snow and ice sensor for frost protection of rainwater systems and can be connected to
the ECO900 frost protection control unit. The sensor is equipped with a heating element that keeps the
surface of the sensor at the constant temperature of approxi4°C. It will melt the snow and ice
which are detected as moisture.
The ECO900 frost protection control unit is available as versions 1 and 2.

INSTALLATION OF SENSOR
The snow and ice sensor ECOA903 is installed between the heating cables in rainwater gutters and attached
by a cable clamp or adhesive (neither one is supplied with the equipment). The sensor must not be in contact
with the heating cables. The sensor is installed in the same direction as the water flow in the gutter with
the two metal pipes upwards (figure 2). It is recommended to install the sensor at the lowest point of the
gutter near the drainpipe. The water running off is led to the sensor surface by extruded strips. The strips
can be cut to fit the existing conditions of the gutter.
The connection cable can be extended to 50 meters by using a 1,5 mm² cable. It is recommended to use a
cable with numbered leads for the extension as it is very helpful for example when trying to locate faults
during a malfunction.
Figure 2 shows the installation of the snow and ice sensor ECO903 and the air temperature sensor ECOA904:

CONNECTION OF SENSOR
Components for frost protection of rainwater systems
•
ECO900 frost protection control unit
•
ECOA903 snow and ice sensor with a heating resistor (5 leads)
•
ECOA904 temperature sensor for air temperature measurement (2 leads)

Version 1 (figure 3):
WH / va = white, GY / ha = grey, GN / vi = green, YE / ke = yellow,
BN / ru = brown, BU / si = blue
Version 2 (figure 4):
white, grey, green, yellow, brown, blue
The ECO900 frost protection control unit is supplied with an 82 kΩ resistor but the air temperature sensor
ECOA904 can be connected instead. In this case the air temperature is also shown on basic display mode
in addition to the gutter temperature and humidity. If the air temperature drops rapidly, predicting the
probable start of rain, the heating will switch on for one hour below temperatures of +7 °C.
