4. P.E.M.S.
Progressive Electrical Muscle Stimulation offers the possibility to create a “normal functional”
sequential contraction of muscles within a movement chain. The P.E.M.S. mode is a special case of
the asynchronous mode, in which the surge program ends on all channels immediately. The specified
hold-time is the hold-time on channel 1.
Duration and frequency of treatment
The frequency of sessions and the number of contractions can also be increased over time and
generally follow the same principles as used in voluntary exercise strengthening programmes, that
is, 8-15 maximum contractions per session, for three to five sessions per week, over 3-6 weeks of
training.
