Operating instructions
The following procedure describes how a device is removed and installed in a pressurized
vessel using the Mechanical Retrieval Tool.
Important
This manual is not a single source of information. Any environment or specific application
needs to be evaluated before initiating any process. Emerson strongly recommends that
operators of the Mechanical Retrievable Tool follow their company required safe job
analysis procedures before any installation work starts.
This chapter presumes that the access fitting is installed on a pressurized pipe with a
protection cover on it, and that the surroundings allow for a live retrieval of the plug
(device) from the access fitting.
4.1
Retrieving a device
Use this procedure to retrieve a device.
WARNING
Risk to Personnel and Equipment: A bleed off sequence can contain hot fluid or
poisonous gas that will cause serious injury. Ensure that actual pipe pressure and media
is confirmed before any operation is started.
Procedure
1. Remove the protective cover only if no leakage is visible. If a pressure retaining
cover is used, make sure to do the following:
a) Fully open the bleed plug.
b) Allow for any pressure to bleed off.
c) Close the bleed plug and wait 2 minutes.
.
e) If any leakage is detected, do not remove the cover. The measurement
provided by the pressure gauge is only a indication of the pressure, not a
confirmed value.
f) Keep the bleed plug open while removing the cover.
2. Inspect the access fitting, focusing on the external threads and the sealing surface
where the service valve seals against the fitting.
NOTICE
No significant corrosion should be visible on the sealing surface. If any is detected, it
needs to be removed before continuing. Make sure both threads and the sealing
surface are properly cleaned and lubricated.
3. Remove the pipe plug by using a wrench to turn it counterclockwise a half turn. If a
leak occurs, stop turning the pipe plug and see if the leak stops after a short while.
Remove the pipe plug only when there are no indications of a leak.
