Varilex
®
Akku
ries that rotate faster than permitted can break
and fly off.
f)
The external diameter and thickness of the
insertable tool must correspond to the specified
dimensions of the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder.
Poorly dimensioned tools can neither be ade-
quately shielded nor controlled.
g)
Tools with threaded inserts must precisely
match the thread of the grinder spindle (M14).
In the case of flange-mounted tools, the diame-
ter of the hole of tool must match the mounting
diameter of the flange. Tools that are not
attached precisely to the VARILEX
®
Akku angle
grinder rotate unevenly and vibrate very strongly,
which can result in a loss of control.
h)
Never use damaged tools. Always check tools,
such as grinding wheels, for splinters and cracks,
and check grinding discs for cracks, and wear
and tear, and check wire brushes for loose or
broken wires. If either the VARILEX
®
Akku angle
grinder or the tool is dropped, check that it is not
damaged or else use an undamaged tool. After
checking and inserting the tool, keep yourself
and other people in the immediate vicinity well
outside of the range of the rotating tool. Run the
machine at maximum speed for approximately
one minute. Damaged tools will usually break
during this test period.
i)
Always wear personal protective equipment
(PPE). Depending on the job at hand, wear full
face protection, eye protectors or safety glasses.
If appropriate, wear a dust mask, ear protectors,
safety gloves or a blacksmith‘s apron to protect
you from small grinding and material particles.
Always protect your eyes from flying debris,
which can be created in the course of various
tasks. Dust masks or respirators must filter the
dust created in the course of the task. Lengthy
exposure to loud noise can damage your
hearing.
j)
If other people are close by, please ensure
that you keep them at a safe distance from their
place of work. Everyone, who enters the area in
which you are working must wear the appropri-
ate PPE. Fragments of the workpiece or broken
tools could fly off and cause injury outside of the
immediate working area.
k)
Always hold the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder
by the insulated handles when using it in situa-
tions in which the tool could come into contact
with hidden power cables. Contacting live elec-
trical cables could induce a voltage in the metal
parts of the grinder resulting in electric shock.
l)
Never put the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder
down before the tool has come to a complete
stop. The rotating tool could come into contact
with the surface on which it is placed, which
could cause you to lose control of the machine.
m)
Never carry the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder
around when it is running. Your clothing could
become snagged on the rotating tool, which
could result in injury.
n)
Clean the ventilation slots of the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder regularly. The motor fan sucks
dust into the casing and a significant accumula-
ted of metallic dust particles can become an
electrical hazard.
o)
Never use the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder
close to flammable materials. Sparks from the
grinder could ignite such materials.
p)
Never use tools that require the use of liquid
coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants
could result in an electric shock.
Kickback and the Corresponding Safety Advice
A kickback is a sudden reaction caused by a
snagged or blocked rotating tool, such as a
grinding wheel, grinding disc, wire brush etc.
The snagged or blocked rotating tool will stop
suddenly, causing the grinder to rapidly rotate
forward in the opposite direction to the tool and
out of control. If, for example, a grinding disc
becomes snagged or blocked in the workpiece,
the edge of the grinding disc that has sunk into
the workpiece can get caught, either causing the
grinding disc to break out or a kickback reaction.
The grinding disc will then either move towards
or away from the operator, depending on the
disc’s direction of rotation where the blockage
has occurred, which can also cause grinding
discs to break.
